Within the Bishop’s Parlour at Abbotsford Convent, Studio Shields presented Synthesis as part of Melbourne Design Week – a curated exhibition gathering more than 40 Australian makers, designers and artists within its heritage rooms. Included in the line up was a one-of-a-kind reception counter featuring Elton Group Eveneer Raw ALPI veneers.

Timber remains one of the most evocative materials, it brings warmth, grain and a natural variation. But when it comes to large wall expanses, ceilings or curved forms, traditional panelling can be expensive, heavy, complex to install and demanding on site programmes.

Paper backed veneer offers a refined alternative. Lightweight and flexible, it provides the look and feel of solid timber in a format that is more aligned with wallpaper than panelling.

11 years after the death of Angelo Mangiarotti, ALPI celebrate the legacy of the Italian architect, designer and urban planner in a retrospective at the Milan Triennale. When Structures Take Shape includes 2 large monolithic totems made from parallelepipeds of variously coloured solid ALPI wood. Built in the mid-80s to a design by Maestro Mangiarotti, the forms and concavities evoke a relationship between the planes and surfaces and reveal the infinite variety of patterns and designs that can be achieved from this material. ‘Nothing like this had been done until then.’
